I can tell you that not a whole hell of a lot of the people working at my Wal Mart fall into any of those three categories. I can tell you that most of them are, however, a) black, and b) poorly educated. In fact, if you go to the Home Depot or Tops in the same strip mall, or the McDonalds nearby, or any of the other sorts of stores that needs largely unskilled labor, those are the sorts of people working the jobs. I don't think a whole lot of the people working at my Wal Mart are doing it just to get out of the house.
A lot of these people could be doing other jobs if they had access to a better education, most of them aren't stupid. Because they don't, they wind up working at Wal Mart and barely scraping by. Sure nobody expects to make the big bucks running a register at Wal Mart, but is it really unreasonable to pay them enough to actually live off of? |
