Wal-Mart Bows to Unions, Copies GM Success Formula by DesertRat662005-05-04 09:32:02

locations across the U.S.

All employees of a particular type are represented by a national union. They have a grievance process where-by the company can be forced to reinstate terminated employees without prejudice. They can negotiate for automatic, time-based wage increases that take effect regardless of the financial peformance or health of the company. As for only hiring union employees, if you want to perform this one particular job for the company, you will be a union-represented employee. There is no choice in the matter.

Perhaps the difference here is that it is a national union, so even though the employees are scattered across the country they are treated as one union local.

I can see where it would be considerably less of a burden if each location was represented by their own local. You wouldn't achieve critical mass quite as easily like that.
