Allegedly "living wage", unless you're supporting a bunch of rug rodents, is covered by minimum wage laws. Problem with forcing higher wages is exactly what MikeCDN shows. We were forced to raise the wage paid to student employees by law. In order to afford the wage increase 20% of the student employees lost their jobs. So 80% of the students got the wage increase they needed and 20% lost all of their income. I'm sure more than a few had to drop out of school because of it.
Not a pretty sight either way. The question is how to fix it?
Oddly enough the Mom and Pop stores in my area are doing even better now that they are located in Wal-Mart's shadow. |
