Antibiotics for acne? by oot2005-05-04 09:26:58
Well, you have some options by Dazed 2005-05-04 09:47:52
(1) Accutane - for very severe acne only; very, very hard on your liver; do it for 6 months, should last for at least 2 years if not longer; it will dry everything else out (all your skin, you'll probably get dandruff, and you shouldn't wear contacts, if you do already). I have several friends that have done this but this is for really, really, really bad acne and one of them regretted it because s/he also developed some joint issues (heck, they could crack their chest when s/he stretched - that's just not normal). They also both tended to lose a lot of weight (mostly muscle) so watch out for that.

(2) Antibiotics (don't know the effects of this, presumably you do)

(3) Birth Control: this can work great for less severe cases (regular birth control) or more severe ones (check out everything about Diane 35 if you want to know about that - very dangerous drug but effective on me at least). As a bonus, you become predictable every month (yay!) and, as long as you are NOT taking antibiotics, are protected from pregnancy (don't know if that matters to you, but figured I'd mention it).

Good luck with deciding - but don't do anything you're not comfortable with. Remember, there's no rush to change prescriptions. Make your own decision in your own time and re-evaluate it when necessary.
