| Antibiotics for acne? |

I have had rather bad acne for a few years. I was treated with a tetracycline-related antibiotic, which did nothing. (I have a history of tetracycline-resistant everything since I was a little kid... long before I actually ever took tetracycline, cultures were showing as resistant.) A few weeks ago my dermatologist put me on a different antibiotic (Bactrum), and the acne is rapidly vanishing.
She says she still wants to put me on Accutane. I am very suspicious of anything that needs a whole spiral-bound book to explain all the potential side-effects, especially when the antibiotics seem to be working. But she says if I don't go on Accutane, I'm going to need to be on the antibiotics for several years, because if I stop taking them the acne will come back.
Is this for real? If you have any experiences with antibiotics or Accutane for acne, please let me know... Accutane scares the hell out of me, so I don't want to go on it unless I really have to, but I'm not sure being on antibiotics for years (if that's really necessary) is a good idea either... |
