My dad did the same thing to my (now) wife. He and I are both a little introverted when it comes to meeting new people. Since he didn't know anything the two of them had in common, he just didn't say much at all. It made her feel like he didn't like her. I politely mentioned this to both my parents one day. The next time he saw her, he made it a point to converse more with her. Now we are a happy family. :)
