...particularly if you're just getting started on this. I remember reading an essay several years ago that drew a line at 6 miles (i.e., anything further was perhaps too far to commute on a regular basis). I'm in pretty decent shape, and 8 miles just takes too darn long to do on a daily basis. In a previous job my bicycle commute--8 or 9 miles--involved cutting through the Stanford campus. I tried to do it about once a week. It was a very nice way to wind down the day.
