It pays to do community service... by jmaxsohmer 2005-05-03 19:27:04
and not just because it's a requirement in order to pass Freshman year at Drexel - I finished my five hours long ago. But now that my friends and I are sure about the not being homeless thing for next year, I was able to go back to TechServ tonight.

TechServ is a non-profit organization at Drexel whose goal is to provide functional computers to Philadelphia public schools. The School District of Philadelphia is very underfunded, and many of the students never learn to use a computer by the time they graduate.

TechServ accepts donations of parts and old, sometimes non-functional computers - the ones that don't work are cannabalized for working parts - and assemples "Frankenputers" from them. Nothing we're able to provide is state-of-the-art, as we operate entirely based on donation and volunteer work (as far as I know we receive no funding aside from very rare monetary donations), but it still is an important contribution.

Although I was unable to participate for the last several weeks, I am actually one of the more dedicated members - I stayed more than an hour after most of the volunteers left. The only others there were the Treasurer, the Vice President, and the Treasurer's house-mate. While we were cleaning up, one of them unearthed a box of TechServ t-shirts. So I got a free t-shirt today! Woohoo!

And that's why it pays to do community service.
