Alright, imagine the stage. I'm playing a half-elven female sorcerer, the other members of the group are: A half-orc barbarian, a human monk, a halfling rogue and a halfling cleric(baptized 'the sardin can' because of the plate mail). Now, I recently reached 8th level and decided to go with the Polymorph self spell. Briefly flapping through the Monster's Manual, I thought I'd try a troll.
The situation: The monk, the rogue and I had walked on ahead, leaving the (neutral evil) barbarian and the cleric to chitchat. We encounter six constructs, two huge and four small. The monk says: "Alright, Naryawen.. Let's do our thing." before charging in. I throw a fireball past him, instantly killing the four minions(his player makes a sour face at me, and the barbarian's player says "Oy! He's stealing MY kills!) - the monk gets in an attack, and the rogue shoots and misses.
Now for round two. The monk and I act at the same time, because our initiatives are equal(both 23). He attacks again. I polymorph into a troll. The rogue faints. I quickly dispose of the two big guys(Mmm... 23 STR, 20-something CON and regen *really* helps.. ;) ) just in time to turn around and see the barbarian charge me. His player is anxious as hell, because he knows he's in the shitter now.. It's in character for his character to attack the troll, but he knows his backside is on the line. If he kills me, the player will be kicked royally by me. If he *doesn't* kill me, his character will be kicked royally by my character.
So he attacks. I've got +6 on my defensive roll, but he's got +17 on his attack so I don't stand a chance. He rolls a critical. Gets in 40-something damage. Everyone's looking at me, expecting me to go bananas and throw him into a wall. I'm chuckling. Cleric(next in initiative queue) asks how much I seem to be hurt. DM answers: "He doesn't seem to be much hurt as you check him up.. Barely injured, you'd say. You see his wounds patch up and disappear in front of your very eyes."
The DM was actually very generous with my Polymorph Self. I had gained the bonus CON HP(the diff. between the troll's CON and mine was 10), so I had a bit in excess of 100 HP.
