I swear, most North Americans are blind. by Illiad2005-05-03 13:32:18

I realize the spelling of my name is decidedly non standard, but it's not rocket science. I'll tell people my name is Thomee (pronounced like Tommy), and I'll immediately spell it so they know it's not the normal spelling.

Now, I understand that throws people off, but my intent is to keep them from putting pen to paper until they let me spell it out again slowly. That much is usually successful. But then, as I spell it out letter by letter, they still manage all sorts of creative mutilations.

The most common, for some odd reason, is Thomme. Why people can't handle stopping after one "m" is beyond me. It's not like Thomas is an uncommon name, and given that my name is a variant of it, you'd think it'd be easy to comprehend.

And I discovered a new creative misspelling this weekend. My mom bought me a birthday cake, and spelled out my name for the girl putting the text on top. What I ended up with was "Happy Birthday Thmee". I believe that's the first time I've seen anyone manage to entirely leave out the "o" :-)
