in front of Dutch family names, like 'van', 'de', 'van der' are part of the name, but you alphabetize on the family name that starts with the capital.

Like "van der Berg" Berg is the name you sort under.

Had a problem at DragonCon a few years ago.
Tannoy: "All whose name starts with A to E, come here for your pass."

"Hi, my name is 'van der Berg."
"No sir, your name starts with "V". See that long line over there, that runs around the hotel three times? You have to go back in line over there. No sir, I don't care you already stood here for 3 hours. You have to go THERE."
