I'd look around for some rackmount chassisess and build my own. I'd go with SATA raid 50 or striped set on a hardware raid card. Spend the denarii on an AMD processor and a boatload of RAM; 2G is maybe enough.

Any thoughts on OS? I was fooling around with video editing a while ago and found a truly amazing video editor at SourceForge for Linux. It was next thing to free then. Don't remember what the name was, though...
