take a bottle of water on with you. Depending on who you fly with the cabin service may range from attentive to non-existent so having your own supply is a Good Idea. Eight-plus hours in a very dry atmosphere will have you dehydrated like you've never been before.

Take books for when the In-Flight Entertainment is crap, take a Discman so you don't have to hear all about your fellow passenger's nail clipping collection and take a light jumper for the plane as they tend to be held on the cold side (sub 20°C).
