In the market for rack-mounted hardware. by rorajoey2005-05-03 11:38:44
Isn't RAID-5 one of the slower ones? by Freakazoid2005-05-03 11:49:46

A lot of it depends on the data type you are by classic_jon 2005-05-03 12:04:35
using and the size of the Parity bits. Raid 5 will write faster if you have a good hardware XOR unit on the SCSI adapter and a decent amount of ram on it to allow elevator sorting. In general, lots of small requests RAID 5 is faster, Large block requests RAID 1 is faster. RAID 5 is faster on writes because it is split between at least 3 drives and writes each bit once. RAID 1 is slower on writes because it has to write each bit twice (once to each drive) I wouldn't recommend RAID 50 or 10 because those setups cost too much!!

Check Firstequipment.com and Ebay for some decent used/off of lease boxes. You can pick up some amazing deals that way if you know your hardware =)

...just remember...buyer beware though...if you get used equipment. Make sure you can return it if it is DOA or not suited to your needs.
