are available that have cables that come out along the wall, similar to the UK plugs. Some surge protectors do, my UPS does, some extension cords do, and a lot of lamp cords do. Most plugs still come straight out though, annoyingly. There is an outlet behind the head of my bed that is mounted in a shallow electrical box and due to a bed rail at just the wrong height one of the outlets is blocked making me have to use an extension cord just to be able to plug in my bedside lamp and alarm clock.
