Striping without parity, yes, but not as slow as straight mirroring. Raid 5 is the way to go if you are concerned about losing your data. All my servers used to be RAID 0 for the OS and RAID 5 for the data. Even piddly crap like dhcp/dns servers. Especially so for things like my OpenView/Cisco Works server or my IronView box.
