Cars in a junk yard sit for months or years, often with the engine open to the elements. Suspension and body components are made with this evrionment in mind, electrics are not. You're almost guaranteed to have massive corrosion in alternators, so it's almost certain to be a waste of time.

Also, there is no way to tell if an electric component is serviceable. I tend to get suspension parts from self-service yardss, so I can avoid a part that is damaged by looking at the donor vehicle.
