I'd be more worried about, for example, suspension parts of unknown provenance, since a failure there could fling you off the road. All that's going to happen if your alternator fails is that your battery will stop charging, and some time after that (ie with plenty of warning) the engine's going to stop too. Of course ideally every part would be brand new and straight from the manufacturer, but of all the dodgy bits you could install an alternator seems like one of the safest.
