bureaucrats)
I'm having conversation with a coworker about Star Trek, and the crux of the discussion is that Gene Roddenberry was an absolute genius. The problem is that after he died, Paramount began replacing the geeks that had been doing good writing with corporate bureaucrats who were more concerned with demographic based ratings. I think it's amazing that Roddenberry was able to create television that captivated hard-core geeks as well as normal people. His successors tried to play to the crowd, and ended up alienating their core group of fans.
True, it's a delicate balance between writing to appease the geeks and writing so as to maintain profitability (you can spout off about "selling out" all you want, but if something isn't profitable, it WILL be doomed to fail - TANSTAAFL, you know).
I think that Paramount would have had more success with the Star Trek franchise if they had included more of the core fanbase (i.e., the geeks that know the fictional universe inside and out) in the descision making process. |
