But it doesn't mean /I/ have to misuse the term. As far as I'm concerned, "hackers" are the people who designed the Internet, who built Linux, and did any number of other creative technical things. Those who like to circumvent security, whether maliciously or not, are "crackers".
Now, as you point out, that's unfortunately no longer the definition that most people use, and I can't see it changing any time soon. I /don't/ go round telling people they're using the wrong words, but I /do/ use them correctly myself. I sympathise with Jeff who's apparently taking such a moronically inflexible and regurgitative exam that he has to do otherwise.
