Hacker is a term we used to use to describe ourselves.

Some script kiddies stole it and the media reported it that way; we have been branded ever since.

I have never tried to break into a system I wasn't allowed to. I have broken into a system where the head programmer (and I use that term VERY loosely.) quit - right in the middle of a major deployment.

Google for ESR and "Hacker" and you'll get an education. Google for ESR and "Geeks with guns" and you'll see my attitude for people who misuse the term.
