Jan Modaal is Joe Average: "modaal" means "mode", as in "the most occuring value in a set of data".

There's also Jan Lul, which is 'Jan D*ck'. (FYOSS? I'm taking no chances.) The latter is more used in connection to opinions, or when referring to lower educated people; the former is more "the average man"; i.e. middle class, 2.4 kids, rowhouse, etc.

We don't have any female equivalent.

Common last names used generically: "de Boer" and "de Vries".
