I've NEVER met a hacker (and I've known several, thank you) who had anything other than disdain for other's privacy. "Oh, I'm not going to DO anything wrong, I just want to know things!" That's a direct quote, and it's why I despise people who mess around like that.
If I walked into someone's house and looked through their records and private drawers, and the owner found me, he'd be within his rights to shoot me. I feel the same about those who do same thing with a computer. You can put a fancy label on it ("software pirate" instead of "common scumbag thief" is an excellent example), but it doesn't change what the mutt is doing or the wrongness of it.
What I regret is that the sleazeballs who break into computers and play "jokes" that cause havoc stole the name of "hacker" from those fairly decent pre-PC hardware types who took odds and ends and made cool things out of them. Sadly, though, these people did hijack the name, and what a "hacker" has been for around thirty years is anywhere from a slightly-nasty prowler to a full-on **comment deleted**. |
