A flow diagram or data flow. Flowcharts are practically useless in object oriented programming, or any programming ;-). The question you need to ask is not "How is the program going to do this?" because that just leeds to the detailed work. While that is an important part, that should only be considered a bit later in the design.

The most important first question is "What information or data am I dealing with and where does it need to go?" From there you can start to divide things into their appropriate boxes and drawing a Data Flow. At that point, those boxes start to become your objects/classes/processes/threads and the functions inside of them.

After you get that laid out is the time to start wondering about the finer details of how to make it work. Right about here is also a good time to decide on the programming language. Yes, I put off deciding on the language until here because once you start laying out what needs to be done, you might find a certain language that you might not have considered fits the design better.
