Software design help needed by cuboci 2005-04-04 10:59:20
I have a general problem writing software. It takes too long. I pretty much know why, though. I'm not spending enough time thinking it through before starting to hack on it. This results in having to do nasty hacks later on to accommodate for bad design decisions ealier or in rewriting lots of stuff over and over.

Might sound easy to fix but actually it isn't. I haven't found a single way so far that helps me get (at least most of) the design right before starting the actual implementation. I know some people just dive into it and emerge on the other side with a cool programme without much effort. But I'm not like that. It takes much more thinking on my part to get something Just Right. All the formal stuff I've learned about software engineering doesn't really help. That's just not the way I work (or rather my brain works).

So what I'd like to know now is, how do you all go about writing software? Specifically, how do you go about writing object-oriented software? Do you have any pointers to good reading material on the web.

I've really got to fix my brain, and quickly.
