As you say, not a big job.
However, I do think it is a valid take on the Doctor. A bit physical and too ready with the old sonic screwdriver, but walking that line between funny and straight and just plain alien.
They did have an impossible task, though. You simply can't recreate a cult classic renowned for wobbly sets, oddball characters and lamentable costumes. Either you do it badly, or you improve it and "lose the charm". What with all the ups and downs the series has had, I'm definitely prepared to give it a chance. Colin Baker was woefully underestimated, and McCoy was just getting good when he was cancelled.
Hopefully, future stories won't be so rushed. You have to admit though - it's a welcome change from the hours and hours of nothing much happening that characterises some past episodes. I'm gambling on the next episode being a lot more "talky". Those always work.
