but if I remember right there are bugs in IE that will cause it not to free memory until the browser is minimized/maximized or something.

The more modern way to do it would be with XmlHttpRequest, but support would be more limited.

Or, if you want to support the back button, you could use hidden IFRAMES.

I know slashdot had links to a couple of articles disecting google suggest/maps and how they used the last two techniques.
