It's not about whether the topic is controversial or not. If any single topic is done over and over and over day in and day out, like the sundry gun threads have been, then yes it needs to be cut back some.

The fact that you include an etc. indicates there is plenty of variety in the controversial topics you reference. Were guns and gun control just one of the group that would be fine. But that topic has come to predominate the board.

You also act as if the request to tone down a topic is novel. It's not.
