and to be fair, the student was correct, he just expressed it oddly. The question dealt with the electrical resistance along the length of a mercury thermeter, which is essentially equal to the parallel resistances of the glass tube and the mercury column. The resistivity of glass is so large compared to mercury that the net resistance is effectively that of the mercury column.
