| Well, you're free to make that choice for yourself, of course. Not free to make it for others, though. You might consider, also, that the presence of guns in other homes makes yours safer as well, because burglars / home invaders don't know whether you have them or not. This is less true in places with strong gun control (DC, NYC, Britain, etc).
If you live in an area where concealed carry is common, that makes you safer on the street, for the same reason.
Why do you consider handguns too dangerous for civilians? They're quite safe with proper training. Many tragedies such as the recent shooting in Houston could be avoided if training were mandatory.
