The explanation I got at MSU (a gay group I was in was allied with a trans group), was that "transsexual" = had surgery to change physical sex "transgendered" = is a different gender in their head than their physical sex (pre-op is not necessarily a synonym, as some transgendered people do not plan on getting surgery) "transvestite" = one who dresses in the clothing of the opposite gender "cross-dresser" = one who dresses in the clothing of the opposite gender Be careful with the word "transvestite", as some people use it to mean "one who dresses in the clothing of the opposite gender AND is sexually aroused by doing so", and will not want the term applied to them if that is not the case.
