Thanks for your help with SCSI problems yesterday it solved it in a round about way. Following your suggestion of setting the RAID array as boot which for some reason didn't work I was starting to give up and decided to apply settings in seemingly wrong ways but for some reason setting the single volume as the boot device now makes the machine boot off the RAID 5 array.

So if anybody else is ever having trouble booting off an Adapted 2120s SCSI controller try setting it to boot off the wrong drive, it worked for me.
