only works when the entire voting population is well-educated, intelligent, and clear-headed about the candidates, the issues, and the overall best course for the nation.
That hasn't been the case in the USA for quite a long time.
The only way to fix it is to institute new controls that would cause a new civil war. You cannot take power away from people and have it accepted.
This is also why guns are so near and dear to our hearts.
If you have owned one, you don't want to give it up, and you won't be one of the people lobbying to take them away from private citizens. Gun owners aren't the ones complaining about the gun conversations either. It just won't happen. You don't fight to take away power from yourself. It's against human nature.
Of course, if you have never had a certain power, like the vote, or a gun - you don't KNOW what it feels like, and you don't understand what it would mean to lose that power. |
