we don't exactly have "freedom of speech" as you in the West know it... But also, we seem to lack many of the problems that tend to go along with it. I don't deny that racism doesn't exist in my country, especially with a Chinese majority who sometimes seem to think they're better than the Malay or Indian minorities. But for some reason, we can all still get along.
And as a really telling clue that racism, while existantial, doesn't affect our society much, our first (and currently only) Singapore Idol is a Malay guy who won against a Chinese guy by an 87% vote victory.
Sometimes I wonder if freedom of speech is sometimes an advantage or a disadvantage to society. |
