Conscription in the US by Feng_Li 2005-03-22 11:56:31
After declan's post and a conversation with a Norwegian friend, I got to thinking. What do you think of universal conscription in the United States? Contientious objectors could perhaps serve in the Peace Corps, and of course we make allowances for medical exceptions and lunatics. Possible benefits include:

Every single American citizen receives quality education and training that will carry over into civillian work. Everyone who wants to go to college and cannot afford it now has an opportunity, via the GI bill.

Inequalities in the curent draft system are abolished. I don't care who you are, you can't buy your way out.

Increased military preparedness. Every citizen can soldier at need, and is already trained in the event of a crisis.

Citizens seeking careers in law enforcement come with a great deal of training already in place.

The national "obesity epidemic" is checked.

Disadvantages:

The entire military system would have to be rennovated to handle the new format. It would take a while to work all the bugs out.

Discuss.
