This gun fetishism annoys me. (rant inside) by chrisP2005-03-22 11:18:07

at making problems disappear. Tell me, do you treat a car as a toy, or do you respect it as something that could be used to kill someone? Would you object to pictures of a car? I don't think that there is a SINGLE gun enthusiast in this community that thinks of guns as "toys". As for pictures of Guns 'n Toastes (it's a streach, I know), it's ART. I've yet to meet anyone who isn't hunting or camping that eats breakfast while armed. Although, I have had some quiche that made me wish I was, but I digress...

The fact of the matter is that there are people in this world who, much to the chagrin of the remainder of society, desire to do harm to others. These people will often use guns. Should honest, law-abiding citizens simply lay down and allow themselves and their loved ones to be hurt or killed? Should they "sit tight" and wait for an underpaid, over-stressed, and underappreciated police force to arrive? Or, should they take up arms and protect themselves? Who is the more dangerous person: the armed criminal, or the armed citizen who isn't sure of which end the bullets come out of?

So you can sit around on your hands when a random act of violence threatens you and/or your loved ones, and wrap yourself in all the righteous indignation in the world; perhaps it will protect you from harm, but I doubt it. As for me, I'd rather have and not need than to need and not have. Remember: chance favors the prepared mind.
