This gun fetishism annoys me. (rant inside) by chrisP 2005-03-22 11:18:07
Ok there have been a couple of gun related threads today (no big news that, btw.) so I put this in a TLP cause I couldn't decide where to post elsewhere.

I feel it's time to state my distaste for the manner in which gun-posession, gun-use, gun-modification, gun-decoration and fiddling with guns in general is advocated by some of us here.

I have, at first, to thank toxin for bringing up that point clearly in some of his posts today.

My points, as short as possible.
I see the need of using armed violence in certain situations. The world is far from being a safe place and for certain people in certain situations, there may be the need to carry weapons.
This is, however, nothing that should be deemed normal or even good. I have no objection to discuss the whens and wheres of abovementioned need, but the obvious combination of advocating guns as a measure of self defence and fiddling with guns as a hobby seems fishy to me and at times distasteful.

Only as an example, photos of guns and meals may be fun once in a while, but posting those on a day like this (and I mean a UF-board-day with the discussions that are going on) seems misplaced to me.
On a side note (I can't help myself here), the particular order of those photos on todays board seems to indicate that size does indeed matter.

A summary of todays posts indicates that a part of the UF community seems to envision education mainly as:
- compulsory military service (good for discipline and respect)
- corporal punishment in schools
- armed teachers (if the above fails?)
Whoa, welcome to the dark ages. If you are inclined to use measures that may be appropriate in a civil war situation, you should not be surprised to get something like a civil war. But well, judging from the breakfast habits, some are well prepared for that.

In summary, I'd really appreciate if guns would be treated as deadly weapons on this forum rather than as toys. That, or refrain from commenting on incidents where they were used to kill people.
