I assumed that police officers would receive such training. (Why don't they? It sounds like a sensible thing). Still I wouldn't trust everybody to keep their guns save and for themselves. Of course they will do so immediately after the training, but what about later when the training beginns to fade (of course you can do refresher courses, but those become routine after a while too)? As for more legal guns = less crime, I'm doubious about it. Sure it will work to some extent (thats why police officers are armed after all), but I think it won't take much until the tide turns and these extra guns result in more deaths (even if it happens in "defence" against a crime).
