If you can't even trust police officers to keep their guns for themselves, is it a good idea to give some to teachers as well?

While most of the teachers probably will keep it safe, it would IMHO be only a matter of time before somebody would take away a gun from a teacher and use that one.
Or until a teacher deciedes that s/he finally has enough of the <whatever you'd call them> in sitting there that torture hir daily and ...

Putting more guns into schools (and what about restaurants, malls, theatres? A shooter could show up there too) is an escalation of the conflict and would IMO only make matters worse. Taking away the guns as much as possible seems to be a better solution.
