if you inflate the price. Since you already killed the other demands on Al's time, it would be risky to jack the price on them since then Al might be out of work period.

However I'd make it known going forward more notice is required as you had to cancel other arrangements made since they declared not to continue previously. This way you don't risk having the customer say "naw, we don't want him if there's a penalty attached" and then scramble to re-assign things.

I don't see a problem with putting in the new contract that notice is required 10 business days prior to the end of the contract (effectively half a month) for any further extensions else a penalty will be incurred. This way you make it clear that the behavior can be painful. If that doesn't work you can create a sliding scale next time, where the closer to the end the higher the fee.
