| Politics vs Ethics dilemma |

For simplicity, let's "define" both words:
ETHICS: is a system of values, and attitudes, within which people will strive to the BEST for the LARGEST POSSIBLE group in * society *
POLITICS: is a system of values, and attitudes, within which people will strive to the BEST for the LARGEST POSSIBLE group in * their own clan or clique *
i guess we found out yesterday, that for SOME politicians this clan could be ... ONE SINGLE PERSON.
If our Belgian government WOULD make a law, applicable to only ONE particular person (or company), there SHOULD be a street protest, strikes everywhere. It would be worse than king Louis XVI or Napoleon or the persian Shah: making a "law" applicable to only one single case is called "arbitrariness" and that was whatfor Louis XVI was beheaded (and the shah banned, and Mobutu chased from his country and ...)
A LAW should -always- be a GENERALLY APPLICABLE rule.
The american government today shows that it is "incapable of democratically reigning the country" and thus SHOULD organize elections. But wait, that wouldn't CHANGE anything. The polarisation of society wouldn't be lessened by elections (and propaganda). Technically it isn't the PRESIDENT who voted this law, it's congress ...
So now LET THEM try and make a specific law, giving the power ... to supervise encryption methods AND keys to (say) Johnsson & Johnson. The very next step is all american banks, insurance companies, IT-consortia (and who else) going to court, accusing congess and attacking (poor?) J&J as well as questioning the law itself.
If that's done HERE, american govt will complain that "europe" is giving an "unfair advantage" to some EU corporation (let's pick german Krupps for the same key-security position) and go to GATT / WorldTradeCouncil / ...
During these few days they do more harm to the democracy inside usa than did the whole civil war.
If democracy survives this attack, maybe "the presidential system" won't. |
