I've had similar situations occur. Given my line of work it's usually clients calling up wanting something done immediately. If they're adamant about it being done that fast I tell them it'll cost them a flat fee (which works out to somewhere between 12 and 14 hours of my hourly rate) payable upon arrival. If I have to reschedule alot of jobs that day because of this the cost to them can go higher, as I usually wind up giving the canceled clients a discount of some form to make up for the trouble of rescheduling. I'm a firm believer in keeping my clients happy, as long as they're willing to do the same. So far the number of clients that have been such PITA'es to warrant the flat fee penalty has been low.

This also alludes to another fact you should consider... will having to pull Al off his new assignment before it starts affect your standing with the other customer. Factor that into your "penalty" equation.

Bottom line, stupidity should be painful. Since you're not allowed to pummel stupid clients, the next best thing is to make it financially painful. :)
