Excluding the ridicule part, it's been tried, in Jamaica. Law-abiding people promptly turned in their guns. Criminals did not, and were delighted to be given such a rich field of victims on which to feast. Perhaps you'd like to try the experiment on your own? Put prominent signs on your windows and doors: "No guns here". Wear one as you walk down the street. See what happens.
