I don't like guns, and I don't think 'personal protection' is a valid reason to have them. (Fortunately, my country of residence, NZ, concurs). I think it's unrealistic and naive to expect a total ban to work, however. Even here in NZ, a country with no native mammals, most farmers have guns. Imported possums and rabbits are a scourge that many farmers spend significant time eradicating, and there'll always be injuries to stock best solved with a bullet and a butcher's knife.
