For every person who owns a firearm to make a statement, there are several more who own one for different reasons - utility, self-protection, non-violent enthusiasm, sentimental reasons, and so on.
You're not going to be able to force such an idea on a people who have fought for and defended the right to bear arms (along with the other freedoms) for over 200 years - simple self-determination and independence will foil that. It would take a sea-change of heretofore-unheard-of proportions to be able to =rationally= entertain such a concept (as in make a credible effort to implement). Such an event is not likely to happen any time soon, especially with everything else that is happening in the world.
Certain fundamental conditions and phobias of the general populace (of the world, not just the US) are going to have to be assuaged - nasty things, like hunger (all the various types), poverty/greed, nationalism, and so on.
Until humanity in general gains some measure of sanity as a species at large, things are not likely to change for the better...
