One of the impressions i got from the whole thing is the following:
'Total gun control may or may not be a good idea, depending on who you ask, but must people agree that it's hard feasible anyway, simply because the wish of the population to have guns is so high that a huge black market would replace the current legal market.'
I assume this is a statement that most would agree with.
Know, just as a 'Gedankenexperiment', I'd like to suggest a way of getting around this: Civilian possesion of a firearm is made illegal. Anyone caught with a firearm, no matter where, will have the gun confiscated and face a large fine or possibly more severe consequences depending on the situation. Gun manufacture and importing is also prohibited and illegal gunsmithing carries very severe consequences (definately more than mere possesion). Additionally, and here's the new idea, people caught with guns would be publicly ridiculed. Build up a culture, where gun possession is seen as a weakness. This can take many forms, the old cliché of guns as phallic compensation comes to mind, maybe an implication of 'only cowards need guns', anything along those lines. Put the marketting/spin industry to work for a positive cause for once.
Do you think it would work? Is it even morally acceptable? |
