There are numerous quotes you can find out on the web and in books that talk about people's plans for destroying "the others" who are related to those who invaded their lands thousands of years ago. Iranians and Iraqis have always been hot to destroy the Jews/Israelis. Syria, Iran and Iraq want to get rid of the Christians. Muslims (in that area) in general want to destroy everyone not of their belief system, and that includes other Muslims with slightly different beliefs than they do (read: different denominations)
Quite honestly, IMNSHO, the middle east is a tinder box waiting for just the right spark to make it burst into flames. And when it does, I don't want to be involved in the conflagration, but I don't see any way for the major nation-states of the world to stay out of it.
For us (and other western nations), the oil is too important to ignore war in the area. For the east, there's the oil, and the fact that they (primarily China, but also some eastern-bloc nations) could finally fight against America with a large enough group to potentially make a dent. And for the middle east, there's a desire to destroy either Christians, other Muslims, Jews, Palestinians, Iraqis, Iranians, Syrians, etc., etc....
