I was in the shooting team at school. We used to go to Ash Ranges every Wednesday afternoon, mostly to shoot the Cadet GP[1]. Although we did shoot at 100 and 200 metres, 300 was the "normal" range. (The sights go up to 500, but we never went further than 300 with the GPs.)
Now, although we never shot at anything moving which must lower the odds a fair bit, I still find it odd when people make a big deal out of shooting from 200-300m. I wasn't that great a shot (no talent but lots of practice) but I could still get most of my shots in the inner rings of the targets we used.
This is all academic, of course, but I thought I'd mention it.

[1] The "Cadet" version of the SA80, with the gas system removed and a hoofing great cocking handle added to make up for it. And rumours that they're made out of Army rifles that fail the accuracy tests. |
