Just to be clear, you stated:- He makes the point that a pistol is VERY VERY hard to aim at the best of times. Even harder to aim at a moving target, and even harder to aim when your heart is pumping and addrialin is going.
A valid point, but not exactly the one I made. I personally didn't find a pistol "VERY VERY hard to aim at the best of times," but I was a marksmanship coach and I know quite a number of my shooters DID find pistols "VERY VERY hard to aim." What I actually said was:
- Pistols are great for short range, but in actual hand-to-hand they generally work better for striking and blocking since getting a well placed shot is not reliable. If one can "draw a bead" before contact, great, otherwise resort to plan "D" ("A", "B", and "C" already failed), you can use the pistol as a blunt object to defend yourself, but don't count on the bullet to do your work for you, ...
Another point you stated was:
- Reread z1roots situation. He, as someone who was trained in guns, wouldn't have been able to draw aim and fire a weapon at his attacker by the time he knew he was being attacked.
This is most likely true, but we'll never know because, as I mentioned, "I did not have, nor have I ever owned, a gun," so drawing, aiming, and firing were never possible. What I DID say was,
- By the time I saw the knife held over the yelling running person the distance was less and I had no time to get out of the way (remember I was RECLINED).
Still, you're most likely right. All I remember having time to do was block the downcoming wrists while tryint to not get stabbed or sliced. Besides which, for personal reasons, in THAT SPECIFIC SITUATION, I would have rather risked personal, potentially fatal, injury rather than use deadly force against that specific attacker at that time, so I wouldn't have drawn any weapon even if I had one on me. One of the rules we used was "Never aim your weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot," which sort of implies, "Don't bother drawing your weapon if you won't use it."
I do appreciate the remark "First of all I think that z1roots comments should be tatooed accross the heads and minds of anyone who has taken a gun course," just please tatoo the correct quotes. :-)
