This is the standard C7A1 rifle which is nearly identical to the M16A4. The weapon has a 20" barrel that when attached to the reciever (and you ain't detaching it unless you're an armorer) creates a package about 28" in length and is probably closer to 29" or 30"

Now the C8A1 would be easier to fit into a backpack, but as a precision rifle it would suck nuttage. It also is said to have not seen a lot of widespread use. There was also the C7A2 variant that had a 16" barrel that saw use in Afghanistan that might also fit in a larger backpack fairly easily.
